This coming Saturday April 26th it all goes down where you can find hundreds of people gathering to witness the brave as they fly across the water field! All riders must be atleast the ago of 21+. If you want to enter it cost $30, which includes a free Kona beach towel and celebratory Kona beer. Ski poles are not allowed in the competition.

For skiers and snowboarders participating in this event each person gets one change to cross the pond all the way. All riders who successfully make it the entire length of the pond during the round one qualify, and will advance to the finals. In the final rounds participants can receive up to a total of fifty points. The final rounds are based on 3 categories, you make it across, your costume, style, and the crowd’s reaction to you. In the event of ties, the judges will deliberate and award the overall winner.

Snowboarders and skiers can receive a maximum of 50 points, and will be judged on this:

•1 Making it Across the 2nd time – 10 points
•2 Costume – 20 points (scale of 1-20)
•3 Style and Crowd Response – 20 points (scale of 1-20)

With the judges scoring like this in the final round, it’s possible to win the Sno-Kona Pond Skim without making it all the way across the pond! Judges will be encouraged to rate costumes on originality, style, cleverness, creativity, and time spent building the entire costume. Keep in mind this event is not about who wears the tiniest bikini, or skimpy costume, or shock the crowd.

Event Prizes
Winner takes home a $500 cash prize, and there will be prizes for second and third place, as well as prizes for best costume, best splash, best this, best that, something else and more!

Sno-Kona Pond Skim Competition, 4-28-2012

It is time to dust off your water wings and pond scum snorkel set as we approach the 2012 Sno-Kona Pond Skim hosted by Mt. Hood Meadows. This annual tradition sends land based humans cascading down a snowy runway in hopes that they will generate enough speed and have enough control to cross the pond without falling in the drink. Of course it is not just making it across that earns you points.

Criteria for this sacred event is based on a three tier scale: Making it across; Costume; and Style/Crowd response. So if you’re planning on entering, don’t forget to dress in your “Sunday best” and by that I mean the most outlandish thing you can think of (as you will be judged on appearance). However shallow that might sound it helps to ease the tension when you catch an edge and belly flop mid pond dressed as a transsexual Batman or a giant burrito or Betty Boop or, well you get the idea. It is like that one guy said in the movie ‘Gladiator’ “… win the crowd, and you’ll win your freedom.” In this case it is win a grand prize trip for two to Hawaii!

Registration for the event concludes on the 26th or after 100 participants have signed up. To sign up and learn more please visit Ski Hood. GOOD LUCK!
