Dr. Robert Smith, Founder of Smith Optics, a literal and figurative visionary of the snowsports world passed away Wednesday, April 18th from complications after undergoing surgery.
As a military dentist stationed in Germany, Robert Smith (Dr. Bob) would frequent the snowy slopes of Kitzbuhel, Austria. During his stay he worked through the notion of a “double lens” to combat fog. He later brought his vision to fruition by creating the first dual lens; setting in motion a concept that would play a pivotal roll in the future of goggle design.
That said, one can only speculate what stage of the goggle game we would be in right now if it weren’t for his creation. That’s not to say someone couldn’t have come up with the dual lens later on down the line. But that idea in hindsight is still speculative fiction. Robert Smith’s vision to enhance Smith sunglasses and goggles for snow goers everywhere just goes to show the impact that a single individual can have on a sport that reaches some many people.
So here’s to you, Dr. Bob! Your love of skiing resonates through your dual lens that provides us all with keen visual clarity. RIP
